My name is Diana and I am the founder of Tiny Seed Family Nutrition.
Family feeding is my passion, but people are often surprised to find out that I care a lot more about how your family feels about food than exactly what you’re eating!
Don’t get me wrong, as a dietitian and as a parent myself, I absolutely believe that all children (and adults!) deserve and will benefit from great nutrition. I hope to help you achieve that.
But without the foundation of a healthy relationship with food, gentle nutrition is a lot harder to put into practice.
As parents and caregivers, our own relationships with food and our bodies will influence our children’s approach to these things more than any other factor.
Because of this, Tiny Seed Family Nutrition works with both children and adults to put positive family feeding dynamics into practice and heal food-related issues brought on by medical conditions or years of chronic dieting.
Our practice is called Tiny Seed Family Nutrition after Diana’s favorite children’s book, The Tiny Seed, by renowned children’s book author and illustrator, Eric Carle (of The Very Hungry Caterpillar fame.)
In The Tiny Seed, one little seed blows through the wind, overcoming cold weather, poor growing conditions and even predators to find a safe place to grow into the biggest, most beautiful flower. The flower then releases its own seeds into the wind and they begin the cycle of finding their own way in the world all over again.
In our current culture, our children will face many hardships when it comes to navigating food choices and embracing their bodies. You’ve likely faced these challenges as well. We see this book as a beautiful metaphor for defying these obstacles, fostering resilience against diet culture and passing the strength to eat well and nurture our bodies onto future generations.
I didn’t always know I wanted to be a dietitian. I studied journalism in college because I love writing and discovering the world.
As the years went on, I realized what I most wanted to write about was food. I specifically wanted to explore how families relate to food and how the substance that literally keeps us alive can be a positive force in our lives.
I was personally drawn to nutrition because I’ve always loved food and enjoyed cooking.
I have great memories of enjoying family meals throughout my childhood. I’ve had the privilege of enjoying a healthy relationship with food throughout my life.
But as I pursued my nutrition studies, I realized that this isn’t the case for everyone and in fact, the majority of the population likely relates to food in a negative way.
After becoming certified as a registered dietitian, I learned about an approach to health called intuitive eating. First developed in 1995 by two dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, the approach is based on utilizing an individual’s wisdom of their own body to make food choices rather than looking to an external diet plan.
I realized that this was the approach to food I’d personally relied on my whole life, without ever knowing there was a name for it. My gift is tapping into this wisdom to help you embrace the freedom of a healthy relationship with food as well.
And because I credit my childhood experiences with cultivating this gift in me, my passion is helping you do the same for your own children.
Many factors can disrupt our relationships with food, be they medical conditions, trauma or societally-imposed body standards. But there’s a path to healing and making food easy again and I’m here to help you discover it.
